Freezing Embryos To Treat Infertility

By: Infertility Treatment Now

More eggs than normal might be produced during In Vitro Fertilization treatment which can be helpful as there will probably be more healthy embryos than are required. Most clinics will give you the chance to freeze and store suitable ‘spare' embryos for future use. Depending on the type of In Vitro Fertilization service you have signed up for, this may be provided free of charge. Sometimes, In Vitro Fertilization treatment is cancelled after the eggs have been collected due to unforeseen circumstances, in which case, storing the embryos would be a worthwhile process.

Having to produce more eggs can be a difficult and often expensive process so by already having them stored, should you decide to use In Vitro Fertilization again, your embryos will be immediately available. It also means you don't have to take fertility drugs that put you at risk of ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome or OHSS and you can maximize your chance of conception from one egg collection. Although it can be extended, the normal freezing and subsequent storage period for embryos is five years. This means that even if you or you partner are diagnosed at a later stage with an infertility problem for example, it will still be possible to have In Vitro Fertilization treatment. Under certain circumstances, a ten year maximum for storage is made, usually if there is an illness involved. In very rare and special circumstances even this ten year limit can be exceeded. The decision to freeze and store your embryos is yours and can be withdrawn at any time. It is also the clinics responsibility to remain in contact with you on a regular basis while your embryos are being stored with them to ensure you want to continue doing so. Don't forget to let the clinic know if you move or if your circumstances change in other ways, for example, if you split up or divorce. Separation or divorce is not in itself an indication that consent to use the embryos has been retracted.

The medical process used to freeze the embryos is called cryopreservation and uses liquid nitrogen. Only healthy, embryos that have been developing normally will be chosen for freezing. It is worth mentioning that not all embryos survive the freezing process even though great care is taken. Because of this fact, it is worth having more embryos thawed than can be used during the transfer process at the next In Vitro Fertilization treatment.
