Acupuncture and the Five Elements

By: Infertility Treatment Now

Acupuncture is one of the ancient techniques of Chinese Medicine and this method resembles the techniques of Acupressure in many ways. Acupuncture helps in curing diseases and in maintaining good health and a state of wellbeing. The positive energy that is responsible for good health and a state of wellbeing is know as chi or qi and flows through the energy points known as the meridian. There are a total of 365 different acupuncture points scattered across the exterior surface of the body, these follow the paths of 14 main meridians.

Acupuncture needles are inserted or acupressure applied at specific sites on the meridians which stimulate and release blocked chi and reestablish free energy flow. Acupuncture is a procedure in which the blocks are freed in the same manner in which obstructions are removed from a river, helping the water flow smoothly. Acupuncture regulates the flow of 'chi' so it flows at a steady pace, not too fast and not too slow.

The needles were found in the late Shang Dynasty archeological digs and it can be seen that for at least 4000 years China has been practicing this type of medicine. There are three types and they are; Five Elements, Traditional Yin / Yang Theory and Western (or medical Acupungture) Alternative approaches are taken to arrive at the basic cause and treatment of an illness.

As the name suggests Five Element Acupuncture follows the five element cycle of Chinese medicine and it also takes the relationship between the mind and body seriously in the diagnosis of illnesses as much as the physical causes. The emotional stress and anxiety that a person experiences must be first dealt with in order to ease the physical pain. Five elements method is a slow process as it does not merely treat the symptoms but the reason behind the illness due to which the process takes a longer period of time to achieve full recovery. According to the Yin/Yang theory the overall balance of the Yin and Yang has to be maintained for good health. All of the acupuncture points can be stimulated along pathways that are completely different in order to affect more than just a single element simultaneously.

Western acupuncture combines Eastern and Western medical techniques and its focus is more on urgent short term treatment. There are two sub-categories of the medical aspect, the first, anesthetic acupuncture, is used in surgical and dental procedures. Symptomatic or 'first aid' is the second sub category; this is used mainly for temporary analgesic pain relieving. Well documented, reliable medical research has shown acupuncture to be successful in treating high blood pressure and migraines, allergies, depression, arthritis, asthma and gynecological problems including infertility. The treatment works best where the illness does not respond to conventional medication, is a persistent one or it is lifestyle related.
